What is this odd sounding CoQ10?
Coenzyme Q10 or CoQ10 is an antioxidant that our body produces naturally. Our body is composed of millions of cells and each day thousands die and thousands more are reproduced in its replacement.
Although many of us hear other types of vitamins such as C or E or B12 and so on, very few have heard of CoQ10. If I have to explain CoQ10 in a simplified manner it would be such as,
CoQ10 is a compound made by your body and stored in the mitochondria of your cells.
The mitochondria are in charge of producing energy. They also protect cells from oxidative damage and disease-causing bacteria or viruses.CoQ10 production decreases as you age. Thus, older people seem to be deficient in this compound.
Our body uses CoQ10 for the maintenance of the cells and it’s growth. As we start to age the production of CoQ10 gets lesser and lesser, to that point when the cells are unable to heal and reproduce. This CoQ10, which is a naturally occurring nutrient that helps boost the conversion of food to energy. Found in most cells of the body, CoQ10 is an antioxidant that helps fight also free radicals.
Free radicals are the oxygen-containing molecules that damage cell membranes and DNA. Free radicals are the mole that eats you from inside, they are widely believed to contribute to ageing and increase the risk of ageing-related diseases like cancer and heart diseases. The use of an antioxidant supplement such as CoQ10 being one is thought to neutralize free radicals, reducing or preventing cellular damage as well as the risk of certain diseases.

While you can easily consume CoQ10 as a supplement, it can also be found in some foods. It appears that CoQ10 is similarly absorbed in capsule form or through foods The following foods contain CoQ10:
- Organ meats: Heart, liver and kidney
- Some muscle meats: Pork, beef and chicken
- Fatty fish: Trout, herring, mackerel and sardine
- Vegetables: Spinach, cauliflower and broccoli

CoQ10 is a fat-soluble, vitamin-like compound that seems to have many health benefits. It is involved in the production of cellular energy and serves as an antioxidant. These properties make it helpful in the preservation of cells and the prevention and treatment of some chronic diseases.
CoQ10 has been shown to help improve heart health and blood sugar regulation, assist in the prevention and treatment of cancer and reduce the frequency of migraines. It could also reduce the oxidative damage that leads to muscle fatigue, skin damage and brain and lung diseases. Additionally, it’s found in some foods like animal organs, vegetables and legumes.

The standard dose of CoQ10 ranges from 90 mg to 200 mg per day. Doses up to 500 mg seem well-tolerated, plus many experiments and studies have shown that CoQ10 does no negative effect even in the higher doses.
Because CoQ10 is a fat-soluble compound, its absorption is slow and limited. However, taking CoQ10 supplements with food can help your body absorb it up to three times faster than taking it without food. Additionally, some products offer a solubilized form of CoQ10, or a combination of CoQ10 and oils, to improve its absorption.
The most important thing to remember is that our body does not store CoQ10. Therefore, its continued use is recommended to see its benefits. Supplementing with CoQ10 appears to be well tolerated by humans and have low toxicity. However, if side effects appear, it is recommended to divide the daily dose into two to three smaller doses.
Side Effects of CoQ10:
As there are so many major benefits of CoQ10, still it is also not immune to the side effects. Not everybody reacts to the same medication as same. A lifesaver to one maybe a life threat to others. Although the goodness of CoQ10 out weights the cons, still below is the snapshot of major side effects.
These are some of the supplements that are widely available Over the counter or some dietician stall in the first world country. CoQ10 is not a medication that you might find in your aushadhi pasal ( medical shops). The good news is there are handful of stores majorly online that store these as supplements. I personally do not think that any prescription is required to obtain these , still I recommend each individual to speak with their medical expert before proceeding to take these pills.
Don’t use CoQ10 if you’re pregnant or breast-feeding without your doctor’s approval, and it might have possible interactions with Anticoagulants because CoQ10 might make these blood-thinning drugs, such as warfarin or Jantoven less effective. This will increase the risk of blood clot.
The good news is I have managed to gather handful of online sites that sell CoQ10, just a suggestion aim for drugs with higher potency than the lesser priced pill, which low potency.
As, you see the tides have changed and the way we shop as well. Gone are the days where pharmacist was in charge of our wellbeing and we believe in his given pills. People have become much more aware, thanks to the information available in the internet. Still, self medicating is very dangerous and I highly advise all to follow the protocol of the medication.
